Improvement in general wellbeing after adrenalectomy for Cushing syndrome

Based on replies to a standardised questionnaire sent to 20 patients operated in Oxford in recent years, there is a gradual improvement in some of the symptoms, with best results observed some 6 months or more after the operation.

The bar chart illustrates the impact of the operation on most severe signs/symptoms experienced by this group of patients.

Initially there is a rapid (but relatively modest) drop in body weight through loss of water. A slower weight loss occurs once the excess fat deposits are being burnt. As the muscle power increases one feels more motivated to engage in physical exercise that contributes to normalisation of body weight.
