Preoperative medication before surgery for Conn’s syndrome

Before adrenal venous sampling

Some of the drugs used previously to control your blood pressure might be changed before proceeding with adrenal venous sampling as they can interfere with the release of aldosterone and could make interpretation of the results of this test more difficult or inaccurate.

Spironolactone or Eplerenone

These drugs are aldosterone antagonists and are frequently used to supplement or replace your antihypertensive medication once the diagnosis of Conn’s syndrome is confirmed.

Potassium supplements

It is imperative to correct the low potassium levels before having a general anaesthetic. In some patients spironolactone is sufficient to achieve this goal but frequently potassium supplements are prescribed for 1-3 months before the operation.

You will have to discuss these issues with your GP and the endocrinologist - you should not self-medicate.
